The following table describes the file extensions that QuickBooks uses for files that it creates, imports, or exports.
.DES QuickBooks form template QuickBooks provides a variety of templates that you can use for your forms.
.IIF Intuit Interchange Format file You can import and export lists and/or transactions using text files with an .IIF extension.
.ND QuickBooks Network Data File A configuration file that allows access to the QuickBooks company file. Do not delete this configuration file.
.QBA Accountant's Copy working file When you export your QuickBooks data for your accountant to review, the accountant restores the export file on his or her computer as a file with a .QBA extension.
.QBA.TLG transaction log file

(for Accountant's Copy)

When you back up an Accountant's Copy, QuickBooks starts a log of transactions that you've entered since the last time you backed up. The file is created during backup provided you have set a verification level. In case of accidental loss of data, Technical Support can use your most recent backup in conjunction with the transaction log file to recover your data.
.QBB QuickBooks backup file When you back up your company file, QuickBooks saves the backup file with a .QBB extension. To open a .QBB file, go to the File menu and click Restore.
.QBM QuickBooks portable company file When you want to e-mail or move a company file, QuickBooks creates a compressed version of the company file with a .QBM extension.
.QBR Report template When you export the template for a memorized report, QuickBooks saves the file with a .QBR extension.
.QBW QuickBooks for Windows company file When you create a company file, QuickBooks saves the file with a .QBW extension. For example, if you enter MyBusiness as the company name, QuickBooks saves the file as MyBusiness.QBW.
.QBW.TLG transaction log file

(for QuickBooks company file)

When you back up your company file, QuickBooks starts a log of transactions that you've entered since the last time you backed up. In case of accidental loss of data, Technical Support can use your most recent backup in conjunction with the transaction log file to recover your data.
.QBX Accountant's Copy (export file) When you export your QuickBooks data for your accountant to review, QuickBooks creates an Accountant's Copy with a .QBX extension.
.QBY Accountant's Copy (import file) When your accountant is finished making changes in an Accountant's Copy, he or she provides you with an .QBY file to be imported into your company file.

QuickBooks sunset policy of older versions

Do you need to upgrade to a newer version?

Effective April 30, 2008, Intuit will discontinue live support for QuickBooks 2005 as shown, subject to certain exceptions. (Live support includes any telephone support, data recovery and password removal services, or electronic support provided by a technical support representative.) Similarly, replacement CDs, diskettes, and manuals are no longer available for QuickBooks 2002 after April 30, 2005, subject to the exceptions shown below.
Which Products Qualify for Live Technical Support after April 30, 2008
  • Windows. QuickBooks 2008, 2007, 2006
  • Macintosh. QuickBooks versions 8.0 7.0 6.0
    Why are older versions retired
? Intuit discontinues live support and access to add-on business services of older versions of the software to focus on supporting more current products, which are used by the vast majority of its QuickBooks customers. As a result, Intuit cannot assure that it can register, provide keycodes, or offer data and password recovery for sunset versions of QuickBooks.
